Reject the Government’s Online Censorship bill. Send a Submission to the Senate now!
What's Happening?
The Australian Government is pushing forward with the "Combating Misinformation and Disinformation Bill," a proposed law that could fundamentally change online speech in Australia and initiate potential crackdowns on “differences of opinion”.
Critics, including civil liberties groups and media organisations, argue that it threatens our freedom of expression and could enable government overreach in regulating what we say and share online.
Why Is It Important?
This bill introduces broad and ambiguous definitions of "misinformation" and "serious harm," meaning any difference of opinion could potentially be censored. Even factual content could be labelled misleading if it "lacked context," giving government-appointed bureaucrats and fact-checkers immense control over what is considered true or false.
Furthermore, this law will empower ACMA to establish enforceable industry codes, which means unelected officials will have far-reaching powers to censor online debate. This is not just an attack on freedom of speech; it's an attack on democracy itself.
A previous draft of the bill was abandoned by the Government after it drew widespread condemnation from tech companies, civil liberties groups and the Australian Human Rights Commission.
Why You Need to Make a Submission
The proposed laws represent one of the most far-reaching threats to free speech in Australia's history.
If passed, it could create an environment where legitimate political, scientific, or social discourse is censored or silenced.
By making a submission, you can directly influence the Senate decision-making process and help protect Australians' right to free speech.
We've teamed up with the Free Speech Union of Australia who have put together a handy tool that allows you to make your own custom Senate submission.
