We call on the Albanese Labor government to scrap moves to empower the Australian Tax Office to squeeze more than four billion dollars from ordinary working Australians and small businesses.
Under the Labor government's policies, the Personal Income Tax Compliance Program is set to be expanded, receiving a staggering $89.6 million boost. Its scope will be expanded from 1 July 2023. This move is estimated to increase receipts by a whopping $474.9 million over the next five years. These tax receipts will come from you, the taxpayer. Labor is effectively squeezing the wallets of ordinary Australians who are already feeling the strain.
Furthermore, the GST compliance program, which is receiving a massive $588.8 million injection over four years from 1 July 2023, will continue to ramp up measures to rake in even more for the ATO. This measure alone is projected to increase tax receipts by $3.8 billion. These new ATO crackdowns won't focus on inner-city Labor voters or the Teal voting climate Karens. The money will come from hardworking small business owners and their families struggling to make ends meet.
At a time when the economy is going backwards and the cost of living is spiraling out of control, it is unacceptable for the Labor government to unleash such a relentless assault on taxpayers. These measures will exacerbate the financial pressures faced by everyday Australians, stifling economic growth and hampering our ability to bounce back from these challenging times.
At the Australian Taxpayers' Alliance, we are appalled by the lack of consideration for the wellbeing of hard-working Australians in the Labor government's decision-making. We believe in an efficient taxation system that supports economic prosperity for all Australians, rather than burdening those who can least afford it.
