FIGHT FOR FAIR FUEL

According to the 2014 International Energy Agency report, over 40 percent of what Australians pay at the pump goes towards taxes. Plus the road user charge adds 25.8 cents to the cost of every litre of diesel used by heavy trucks. All this before the government levies the additional 10 per cent GST.
By contrast, Americans spend less than 16 per cent of their fuel bill on federal taxes and unlike Australia, the US spends those tax dollars on transport infrastructure.

Fuel taxes are inherently regressive. Blue-collar workers like truckies, tasked with transporting all types of goods across the beautiful but vast Australian landscape, feel the fuel tax more than anyone. The freight industry estimates the tax increase will cost them $650 million over the next three years. Poorer Australians who can’t afford to live near the coast or trendy inner-city neighbourhoods pay a higher fuel tax with their longer commutes and older less fuel-efficient cars. Lastly regional Australians, who don’t have access to public transportation, fund those inner-city perks by filling up their vehicles with over-priced over-taxed petrol.

We demand an end to fuel taxes. We demand a more affordable system for road users. We demand fairness.
