Release: Push to abolish stage three tax cuts must be vehemently opposed

The country’s largest advocacy group for taxpayers is calling on the Albanese Government to stick with its election promise to implement a round of income tax cuts.

Hitting back against calls to abandon stage three tax cuts due to start in 2024, the Australian Taxpayers’ Alliance (ATA) is urging the government to instead go further and cut taxes for lower income earners.

ATA President Brian Marlow labelled a push to abolish tax cuts a dishonest and egregious attack on jobs and the economy.

“We’re in a critical post-pandemic period where tax cuts across the board would help hard working Australians keep more of what they’ve earned, and use that money to cover the rising costs of living,” Mr Marlow said.

“It’s not just about stage three tax cuts as far as we’re concerned; every Australian who pays taxes in this country should get a cut.

“After all the economic carnage Australians have faced, it’s the least the government can do.”

ATA Chief Economist Dr John Humphreys said stage three tax cuts formed the most important piece of microeconomic reform in Australia’s recent history.

“It is absolutely crucial that these tax cuts go ahead to help boost productivity,” Dr Humphreys said.

“It is the only sustainable way to increase wages for working Australians.”

The ATA has also hit back at calls to abolish the tax cuts from Liberal MP Russell Broadbent.

“If Mr Broadbent thinks tax cuts should be abolished, we think he should take a moment to read his own party’s We Believe’ statement, which explicitly states the party believes in avoiding burdensome taxes,” Mr Marlow said.

“Maybe he’s forgotten his own party’s core principles, as a lot of liberal MPs seem to have.

“To completely fold on tax cuts just sends voters the message that if they vote Liberal, they’ll get far left policies anyway.”
