Release: Labor gets away with stealing $388,000 of taxpayer money

The Australian Taxpayers’ Alliance, the nation’s largest grassroots advocacy group representing all taxpayers, today calls for further investigation into the Victorian Police Department’s decision to not press criminal charges over Labor’s “red shirts” rort.

“Labor used $388,000 of taxpayers’ money to pay campaign staff. The Labor party quite literally stole from taxpayers to help their candidates win.” Says ATA Communications Manager, Emilie Dye. “Most thieves go to jail when caught. Taxpayers deserve to know why the Victoria Police and the Office of Public Prosecution are letting this case fall by the wayside.”

“Many MPs refused to cooperate with the police investigation further obscuring the facts. We should never treat our elected officials as above the law. A bank robber is no different from an embezzling banker who is no different from a rorting politician.

“Regardless of political party, using taxpayer dollars to campaign is against the law. Politicians should never forget the money they use to run our government belongs to hard-working Australians.

“Taxpayers deserve all the information when it comes to how politicians use and misuse their taxes. And they deserve an explanation into why the Victoria Police and the Office of Public Prosecutions declined to press charges against the “red shirt” rorters, including all legal advice relating to this decision.”
