Release: Domestic Gas Reservation an Unnecessary Evil
The Australian Taxpayers’ Alliance, a 75,000+ member national grassroots advocacy group representing the nation’s taxpayers, today called for the easing of supply-side restrictions in Australia’s natural gas production to ensure affordable and reliable electricity for taxpaying families and businesses across Australia.
“A domestic gas reservation policy like that of Western Australia might drive down prices, but it would come at the cost of jobs and investment in our resources sector.” Said Satya Marar, ATA Director of Policy. “There’s no need to punish workers, businesses and the Australian economy when supply-side restrictions across our eastern states, such as fracking moratoriums in South Australia and Victoria, can be eased to boost extraction and lower energy prices.
“It’s a national shame that our resource-rich country with an abundance of uranium, coal and natural gas, has some of the highest electricity bills in the world due to policy failures by successive state and federal governments. Pensioners are being forced to turn the heating off in winter, and businesses are rapidly moving overseas to where electricity prices are sometimes half or a third of what they are here. When they go, they take jobs and investment with them.
“Let’s end this madness. Let’s unlock the potential of our resources.”
